What Is Hospitality Insurance?
What Is It?
Hospitality insurance is the kind of cover which protects establishments like restaurants, hotels, pubs, and nightclubs – all of whom serve customers in a few ways, be it by offering things like food, providing accommodation, or putting on entertainment.
Most hospitality insurance policies include the standard cover of public liability (PLI), typically starting at £2 million. PLI protects your business if a customer is injured or their property is damaged while on your premises.
If you employ staff (which as a hospitality based business you’re probably going to be) then you’re legally required to have employers’ liability insurance (ELI), which covers work-related injuries or illnesses. Standard policies for ELI usually provide up to £10 million in coverage.

Which Policies Are Usually Included In Hospitality Insurance?
What’s Included?
Employers Liability Insurance (ELI)
In all likelihood, you’re going to have a team of staff working for you, and so ELI is a legal requirement – and is therefore normally always included in any hospitality insurance you take out. If any of your employees are injured, become ill, or experience a work-related accident when they’re on shift, then this is what covers you against losses.
Public Liability Insurance
Whilst something bad happening to one of your staff/employees is protected against by ELI, for the customers you have visiting your hospitality venue, you’ll need Public Liability cover to protect against financial losses should a claim arise should they become injured when they’re visiting your venue.
Public Liability Insurance
Business Contents Insurance
This policy does what it says on the tin, it covers all of your physical assets like furniture, fixtures, and other kinds of equipment within your premises. Should some of these things (or all of them) get damaged in something like a fire, a flood, or if they’ve been stolen or vandalised – then business contents insurance helps cover the cost to replace or repair it.
Business Interruption Insurance
Another cover that does pretty much what you’d expect it to, if your hospitality venue is forced to close due to an insured event such as a fire, a flood, or significant property damage then business interruption insurance is what will cover the lost income and operational costs while you recover.
Business Interruption Insurance
Loss of Licence Insurance
This depends on exactly what it is that your business does, but for those hospitality venues who rely on serving alcohol or hosting events, the loss of a licence can be financially devastating. Loss of Licence cover provides compensation if your alcohol, entertainment, or other relevant licence is revoked due to circumstances beyond your control.
Legal Expenses Insurance
Employee grievances, contract disputes with any suppliers or claims made by dissatisfied customers are but a few of the legal disputes which could arise from running a business in the hospitality sector. With legal expenses insurance though, you’re covered for the costs of legal representation, court fees, and settlements.
Legal Expenses Insurance
How Much Does It Cost?
There’s no one price for hospitality insurance. In the same fashion as any other kinds of commercial insurance, the cost of hospitality insurance for your pub, restaurant, hotel or other kind of venue will depend on several factors.
The major things like; the size of your premises, the number of employees you have, and the type of services you offer, such as serving alcohol or hosting events are what will make the most difference to the overall cost of your policy. Businesses with higher customer traffic or specialised facilities, like commercial kitchens or dance floors, may well need additional coverage which smaller less niche venues may not need, all of which can increase or decrease premiums.

Do You Need Hospitality Insurance?
Do I Need It?
Legally, you’ll probably be required to have at least some of the policies covered by hospitality insurance. But to be brutally honest, you should be taking out the right level of cover for your business regardless of whether or not it’s a legal requirement. No one expects that a disaster will affect them personally, but they do, every day and if you’re not covered then you could be saying hello to a whole load of unwanted expenses and goodbye to a profitable business!
The best thing to do to find out how much cover is going to be appropriate for your business and which policies you should be including is to reach out to a member of our team today! We’ll be more than happy to take the time to understand how your business works and where there might be a significant risk that you need protecting against.

How Hospitality Insurance Might Work In Action
Sophie runs a popular restaurant known for its great food. One night, a customer unfortunately trips over a loose floor tile near the entrance, and this causes them a serious leg injury. The injured customer then files a personal injury claim against Sophie’s restaurant seeking compensation.
If she hadn’t taken out the right insurance, this legal battle could have cost Sophie thousands, threatening her business and not to mention the horrible stress that it would bring. Thankfully in Sophie’s case though, her hospitality insurance that she took out before opening included public liability cover, which pays for the legal fees and compensation.

Hospitality Claim Examples

Consider a scenario where a fire occurs in your restaurant’s kitchen because of a malfunctioning oven, leading to significant damage to the building and its contents. Business contents insurance would cover the expenses for replacing damaged equipment and repairing the premises, enabling you to reopen swiftly and avoid substantial financial losses that could be difficult to recover from.
Now, imagine your nightclub’s alcohol license is suddenly revoked due to a noise complaint you didn’t know about. Loss of license insurance would provide compensation for the income you lose while you work to get your license reinstated.
